Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA 2488)

Binder for wall putty and primer coats — raises cohesion and adhesion, and keeps the cured surface easy to sand.
ALCellu PVA 25 kg export bag

Product overview

What PVA is

PVA 2488 is a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol that goes into solution in cold water under stirring. In interior wall putty and stone-paint primers it works as the binder: it holds the filler together, improves adhesion to the substrate and leaves a film that sands without tearing.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask about PVA

What does PVA do in a wall putty?

PVA binds the putty: it holds the filler together, anchors the coat to the substrate and keeps the cured surface easy to sand. It is the film-forming part of an interior wall putty, so it is dosed for adhesion and sandability rather than for thickening. The same binder carries a stone-paint primer coat.

Does PVA 2488 dissolve in cold water?

Yes. PVA 2488 is partially hydrolysed, which is what makes it soluble in cold water under stirring — no heating step and no cooking vessel on the plant floor. Fully hydrolysed grades are the ones that need hot water, and they are a different product. Add it to the water before the filler, or the granules stay trapped in the paste.

How is PVA packed and shipped?

PVA ships in 25 kg bags or 1,000 kg jumbo bags. Custom printing is available on all pack sizes and the artwork design is free of charge. The minimum order is 1 metric ton. Loading quantities for a 20-foot container are quoted per order. A free sample is available so you can run a trial mix before ordering.
