HPMC 100,000 mPa·s — ALC-H1000 High-Viscosity Grade

ALC-H1000 is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 100,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV). It is the high-viscosity band of the series: strong water retention and sag resistance at a low dosage, for wall putty and gypsum plaster that have to stay workable while a thick coat cures.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H1000 fits best

ALC-H1000 is used in the following systems — Wall putty, Gypsum plaster, High-build putty. Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Any system that has to flow or level — self-levelling compounds, paints, sprayable finishes — this band is built to stop flow, not allow it.
  • Thin hand-applied skim coats on smooth substrates — the mix drags and balls under the trowel; use ALC-H200 or lower.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H1000?

Batches typically measure between 90,000 and 120,000 mPa·s against a nominal 100,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

Is a higher viscosity grade a better product?

No — viscosity is a design parameter, not a quality ranking. The 100,000 mPa·s band buys water retention and sag resistance at low dosage, and it costs flow and workability while raising water demand. A putty that has to be sanded in two coats is a better product on the right band for it, whichever number that is.

How is ALC-H1000 used in gypsum plaster?

It retains the water the substrate would otherwise pull out of the plaster, and keeps the paste lubricated so it spreads without lumping. Setting time is not its job: retard the gypsum with a dedicated retarder, dose the ether from the table above, and confirm both on a laboratory trial — over-dosing the ether to slow the set is a common and expensive mistake.

What should I watch when switching to a high-viscosity band?

Dispersion and water demand. Add the powder to the water under shear and let it hydrate before adding binder, otherwise high-viscosity grades lump; the delayed-solubility behaviour helps here. Expect to re-tune the water addition too — the same dosage of a higher band thickens more, and a straight swap usually over-stiffens the mix.
