HPMC 4,000 mPa·s — ALC-H40C Tile-Adhesive Grade (C1)

ALC-H40C is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 4,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV), positioned for C1 tile adhesives and joint fillers. The C suffix marks a tile-adhesive grade: water retention and open time come first, with enough yield stress to hold a ribbed bed on a vertical face without slumping.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H40C fits best

ALC-H40C is used in the following systems — Tile adhesive (C1), Joint filler, Skim coat. Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Premium C2TE adhesives — the slip and extended-open-time targets of that class are better served by ALC-H500C.
  • Self-levelling compounds — at 4,000 mPa·s this grade builds more yield stress than a compound that has to flow can tolerate.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the C in ALC-H40C mean?

The C suffix marks a tile-adhesive grade. ALC-H codes are built as ALC-H plus the nominal viscosity divided by 100, then an optional suffix: C for ceramic tile adhesive, I for instant (surface-treated) grades, and no suffix for standard delayed-solubility grades. So ALC-H40C reads as the 4,000 mPa·s tile-adhesive grade of the series.

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H40C?

Batches typically measure between 3,600 and 4,800 mPa·s against a nominal 4,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

Should I use ALC-H40C or ALC-H100C in a C2 adhesive?

Start with ALC-H100C. The slip and tensile requirements of C2 are easier to meet from the 10,000 mPa·s band, while ALC-H40C is the economical choice for plain C1 adhesives and joint fillers. If your sand is well graded and the climate mild, ALC-H40C can still pass C2 — but that has to be proven on a trial, not assumed.

What dosage should I start with in a C1 tile adhesive?

Start at 0.20 – 0.40% of binder weight and adjust against your own sand, because clay and silt consume part of the water-retention capacity. Raising the dosage cannot fix poor sand beyond a point; the correct fix is usually a different viscosity band or a cleaner sand source. Confirm the final figure on a plant trial before production.
