HPMC 20,000 mPa·s — ALC-H200 Multi-Purpose Grade

ALC-H200 is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 20,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV). It is the multi-purpose band of the series: enough body for wall putty, EIFS base coat and hand-applied render, without the water demand and shortness that come with the very high bands.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H200 fits best

ALC-H200 is used in the following systems — Wall putty, EIFS base coat, Render (hand-applied). Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Self-levelling compounds and paint thickening — the yield stress at 20,000 mPa·s is far above what a flowing or brushing system can tolerate; use ALC-H4.
  • Premium C2TE tile adhesives — the slip target of that class is the design point of ALC-H500C, not of a general-purpose band.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H200?

Batches typically measure between 18,000 and 24,000 mPa·s against a nominal 20,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

What makes ALC-H200 the multi-purpose grade?

Its position in the band. At 20,000 mPa·s the grade has enough yield stress to stop a putty or a base coat from sagging, but still spreads and sands like a working material. That lets one inventory item cover putty, render and EIFS base coat — useful when storage and working capital matter more than squeezing the last percent of performance per application.

ALC-H200 or ALC-H500C for render?

Hand-applied render: ALC-H200. Machine-applied render and premium tile adhesive: ALC-H500C. The pump and the spray head add shear that a hand trowel does not, and the higher band keeps the sprayed material on the wall instead of sliding. If you spray but still want one grade, dose ALC-H200 at the top of its range and test slip before committing.

Can ALC-H200 go into a C1 tile adhesive?

Yes. The 20,000 mPa·s band sits inside the C1 window and is a common choice when one grade has to serve adhesive, putty and render lines at once. It is not tuned for adhesive the way the C-suffixed grades are, so treat the dosage as a fresh starting point and confirm slip and open time on your own sand before production.
