HPMC 150,000 mPa·s — ALC-H1500 Very-High-Viscosity Grade

ALC-H1500 is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 150,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV). It is the very-high-viscosity band of the series: water retention and sag resistance for high-build putty and plaster, where a thick coat has to hang on a vertical face while it cures, at a dosage that stays economical.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H1500 fits best

ALC-H1500 is used in the following systems — High-build putty, Plaster (thick coat), Wall putty (single-coat). Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Flowing or levelling systems of any kind — self-levelling compounds, paints, spray finishes — this band exists to stop flow.
  • Multi-coat putties that are sanded between coats — the extra body is wasted cost when two thin coats are the specified method; ALC-H1000 or ALC-H200 fits better.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H1500?

Batches typically measure between 135,000 and 180,000 mPa·s against a nominal 150,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

When does 150,000 mPa·s make sense over 100,000?

When the coat is thick, the substrate thirsty or the climate hot. High-build putty applied in one pass, plaster on very absorbent masonry, and work in hot, dry conditions all draw water faster than a 100,000 band can conveniently hold, and the higher band retains more per gram. If your coats are thin and sanded between passes, the extra band is cost without benefit.

Are very high viscosity grades harder to mix?

They need more care in dispersion, not more effort overall. Add the powder to water under shear and let it hydrate before adding the binder; dumping it into a dry blend and flooding the mixer is what causes lumps. The delayed-solubility behaviour of this grade helps — the particles disperse before they start to build viscosity.

What dosage should I start with in high-build putty?

Start at 0.15 – 0.30% of binder weight and treat that as a starting point, not a recommendation. Sag resistance improves as dosage rises, but so does mixing difficulty, and local filler grading moves the optimum. Lock the figure only after a trial on your own materials and at your working temperature.
