HPMC 250,000 mPa·s — ALC-H2500 Maximum-Water-Retention Grade

ALC-H2500 is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 250,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV). It is the top of the published ALC-H bands: maximum water retention per gram, for machine-applied plaster that is sprayed thick onto a wall and has to stay there while it cures, at the lowest workable dosage.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H2500 fits best

ALC-H2500 is used in the following systems — Plaster (machine-applied), Heavy-build mortar, Repair mortar (vertical). Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Anything that has to flow, level or brush out — self-levelling compounds, paints and trowel-applied thin coats are all outside this band by a wide margin.
  • Hand mixing on site — the dosage window is narrow and the dispersion needs machine shear; a part-mixed batch lumps and there is no way to recover it.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H2500?

Batches typically measure between 225,000 and 300,000 mPa·s against a nominal 250,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

Why is the top of the band used for machine-applied plaster?

Because a sprayed plaster is the hardest water-retention problem on a site: a thick layer, applied in one pass onto a wall that keeps drawing water, in whatever the weather is that day. The 250,000 mPa·s band retains more water per gram than any lower band, so the dosage stays low enough for the pump while the layer still hangs and still cures without cracking at the surface.

Is 250,000 mPa·s the highest grade ALCellu produces?

It is the top of the grades with their own page on this site. The same line also produces intermediate bands — 195,000, 200,000 and 220,000 mPa·s among them — made to order and released with the same TDS workflow. Ask for the current list if none of the published bands matches your formulation exactly.

What dosage should I start with in machine-applied plaster?

Start at 0.10 – 0.25% of binder weight. The window is narrow at this band: too little and the layer slides or cracks at the surface, too much and the pump struggles and the mix turns short. Pre-blend a master batch rather than dosing at the machine, and confirm the figure on your own sand, plaster and hose length before production.
