HPMC 50,000 mPa·s — ALC-H500C Premium Tile-Adhesive Grade (C2TE)

ALC-H500C is a delayed-solubility hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose rated 50,000 mPa·s at 2% in water and 20 °C (Brookfield LV). It is the premium tile-adhesive band of the series: the yield stress that keeps a C2TE adhesive at a slip of 0.5 mm or better, and the water retention that machine-applied render needs at a dosage that still pumps and trowels.

Typical values for this grade, not a specification guarantee — the contractual figure is the one stated in the COA issued for your batch. Viscosity is measured on a 2% aqueous solution at 20 °C, Brookfield LV, 20 rpm.

How HPMC works in a mortar is the same across grades — see the HPMC category page for the water-retention, anti-sag, open-time and film-forming mechanisms behind every grade. What changes with viscosity is the number and the application band, and those are on this page.

Applications

Where ALC-H500C fits best

ALC-H500C is used in the following systems — Tile adhesive (C2TE), Render (machine-applied), High-build skim coat. Which viscosity band suits which system is set out in the application-and-viscosity table on the HPMC category page .

Not recommended for

  • Self-levelling compounds, paint thickening and any system that has to flow — this band builds yield stress by design.
  • Hand-applied thin skim coats on smooth substrates — the mix turns short and drags under the trowel; ALC-H200 is the better fit.

A grade that is wrong for the system costs more than the price difference between two grades. Tell us the system and we will tell you if this one is a poor fit.

Batch consistency, export documents and response time do not change with viscosity grade — they are set out under six things procurement can verify on the home page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity variation should I expect between batches of ALC-H500C?

Batches typically measure between 45,000 and 60,000 mPa·s against a nominal 50,000 — that is −10% to +20% of nominal. The spread comes from the test method, the test conditions and the instrument, not from a drifting process. The contractual figure is the one stated on the batch COA, measured at 2% aqueous solution and 20 °C.

Why does a C2TE adhesive want the 50,000 mPa·s band?

Because the T classification is a slip test. EN 12004 T means the ribbed bed may not slip more than 0.5 mm under a tile, and holding that on a vertical face is a yield-stress job. The 50,000 band delivers it at a dosage that still trowels and still wets the tile — go higher and the mix turns short; go lower and you are back into C1/C2 territory.

Why is ALC-H500C also listed for machine-applied render?

Because spraying adds shear a hand trowel never sees. A machine-applied render is pumped, sprayed and then left to hang on the wall, and the higher band keeps the applied layer there instead of sliding, while the dosage stays inside a range the pump can move. Hand-applied render usually settles one band lower, on ALC-H200.

Can I replace a lower grade one-to-one with ALC-H500C?

No — re-tune the dosage first. A one-to-one swap with a 10,000 or 20,000 mPa·s grade over-thickens the mix, raises water demand and makes the adhesive short. Start from the dosage table for this grade, then run a side-by-side trial and compare slip, open time and trowelling feel before locking the formula.
